Dissolved iron and manganese in the water which affects the tastes of food and beverages, and can contribute to the blockage of pipes, aesthetically disturbing and may cause many other undesirable problems. The precipitates in the pipe network promote bacterial accumulation which can reduce significantly the microbiological quality of water. Since it has so many undesirable properties, BIRM filled iron removal is an important phase of water treatment.
Many technologies exist for the removal of iron and manganese, but the selection is always depend on the given parameters. The design of water treatment system should take into consideration of the iron and manganese content in the water, such as; chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH value of water and the required amount of water (m3/h).
For the removal of iron from water, the most commonly applied techniques are using in different types of filtering media, such as BIRM.
In most cases, the chlorine chemical is use for the iron removal and destroying harmful bacteria from the water.
The iron removal system consists of three main parts:
If you would like to choose the well establish procedure, as a first step, please go through complete water analysis examination which should includes; microbiological and chemical testing. After having the chemical testing/analysis report, we will prepare and submit the quotation with specifications accordingly.
Iron equivalent (mg/I) = 1 x Fe inden (mg/I) + 2 x Mn index (mg/I)
Determination of the Filtration velocity according to iron equivalent:
Iron equivalent Filtration Velocity
<0.2 mg/I 18 m/h
0.5 mg/I 15 m/h
1.0 mg/I 12 m/h
1.5 mg/I 10 m/h
2.0 mg/I 8 m/h
3.0 mg/I 6 m/h
Required filtering surface (m2) = Flow rate (m3/h) / Filtration velocity (m/h)
Birm capacity: 1,4 gFe/I
Backwash: 25-30 m/h
Water pH-range: 6,8 - 9,0
The solve oxigene index has to be 15% of the iron index.
The free chlorid index had to be lower than 0,5 mg/I.
The sulphurhydrogene has to be removed before the filter.
