Oxidizing Method for Arsenic Removal

Oxidizing Method for Arsenic Removal
Description

The presence of arsenic in groundwater is both naturally occurring and/or the result of contamination associated with agricultural and industrial practices.  Severe human health effects have been observed in populations that are exposed to persistent arsenic in ground waters destined for potable and drinking water applications.  Industrial and manufacturing processes utilizing the ground waters which containing arsenic and need to address treatment as it relates to the in-fluent, recycle and reuse requirements.

Naturally many compounds occurs in arsenic, and removing those from water is a very difficult task. So it is important to choosing the right technique for arsenic removal and essential to know what kind of other materials are present in the water, so a complete water analysis can be prescribed.
Features

Oxidizing is one of tbe best method for arsenic removal that are adsorption and catalysis.

In the groundwater, arsenic is partly present as arsenate, or trivalent arsenic. Removal of the low-valent arsenic in water is very difficult; therefore, this could be achieved by oxidizing the trivalent arsenic (As2O3) into five-valent arsenic (As2O5) which is now adhering to other metallic materials such as iron, thus easily filtered through mechanical filters.

Oxidation/filtration can be used as a special case of pressurized granular-media filtration where the granular media catalyzes the oxidation and precipitation of iron and manganese. Manganese-oxide (MnOx) media, which include manganese greensand and pyrolucite, are commonly used in oxidation/filtration processes because of their unique adsorptive and catalytic capabilities. Greensand is manufactured by coating glauconite with manganese dioxide, while pyrolucite is a naturally mined ore composed of solid manganese dioxide. Greensand media has been shown to be capable of removing up to 80% of arsenic by oxidation/adsorption.
